Pet Health Myths That Can Catch Owners Out

If you’ve ever taken pet advice from a friend, a family member, or a well-meaning stranger at the park, you’re not alone. Pet myths don’t usually sound wild or wrong – they sound familiar. That’s what makes them tricky.

The truth is, many of the most common pet health myths are based on outdated information, half-truths or habits that simply haven’t kept up with what we now know about animal health.

So let’s clear up a few of the big ones – without judgement.

Myth 1: Animals will let you know when they’re really sick

Pets are experts at masking pain. In the wild, showing weakness can be dangerous – and that instinct hasn’t disappeared. By the time some pets “act sick”, they may already be quite uncomfortable.

What helps:

Noticing small changes early – like altered sleep patterns, avoiding stairs or being unusually quiet.

Myth 2: Bad breath is just part of having a pet

That “doggy breath” or strong smell from a cat’s mouth isn’t normal. It’s often an early sign of dental disease, gum infections or other underlying health issues.

Why it matters:

Dental problems can affect your pet’s heart, kidneys and overall wellbeing if left untreated.

Myth 3: If they’re drinking lots of water, it means they’re just thirsty

An increase in thirst can be easy to miss (especially in summer), but it can also point to issues like diabetes, kidney disease or hormonal imbalances.

Tip:

Sudden changes are more important than the amount itself.

Myth 4: Pets will stop eating if something’s wrong

Many pets continue eating despite pain, nausea or stress. Appetite alone is not a reliable measure of health.

What to watch instead:

Changes in enthusiasm for food, chewing on one side or eating more slowly than usual.

Myth 5: If it worked for my last pet, it’ll work for this one

No 2 pets are the same. Age, breed, size, lifestyle and health history all play a role. What suited one dog or cat perfectly might not be right for another.

Pet care isn’t one-size-fits-all.

Good pet care isn’t about being perfect – it’s about staying curious, asking questions and being open to updating what you ‘know’. Letting go of a few common myths – “But Everyone Says It’s Fine” – can go a long way toward giving your pet a healthier, more comfortable life.
