TEARS Animal Rescue is making a difference in Cape Town with a powerful initiative that speaks to the heart of what it means to love and care for pets. Their Feed Hungry Pets Programme is a lifeline for families in low-income communities who are struggling to feed their beloved animals.

When times are tough, many pet owners face the devastating choice between feeding themselves or their pets. While some animals may try to fend for themselves, the reality is harsh—urban scavenging is dangerous, and many pets go hungry.

But hunger doesn’t mean neglect. In most cases, these are deeply loved pets, and the people caring for them are doing their best. That’s where TEARS steps in, helping ensure that no family has to give up their pet simply because they can’t afford food.

“We’re appealing to the public to help us assist these families and their pets,” says Mandy Store, TEARS Operations Manager. “We all love our pets, so we can imagine how devastating it must be to give them up or watch them go hungry.”

The Feed Hungry Pets Programme supports pet owners with supplemental feeding, helping them keep their furry companions at home, where they belong. This not only prevents unnecessary surrenders but also frees up shelter space for animals who are truly abandoned or mistreated and in need of critical care.
